PREFACE
PREFACE is a technology education startup that is also known for their coffee and wine business. It aims to provide a space where anyone can engage in meaningful conversations over some good brews.
During my time at PREFACE Coffee and Wine, I served as a barista while also leveraging my design background to contribute to the company's branding efforts. With the company's rapid expansion, I was given access to the company's design resources to lighten the load of the head office. I assisted the branding and design team with creating store-specific designs.
I was incredibly lucky to be able to showcase and practice my skills and have fun in the process.
Project 1
Social Media Photos
The first project I was assigned to was to take photos for the company's social media account. I've been tasked to take high quality, eye-catching photos that aligns with the company's minimalist elegant aesthetics.
Project 2
Promotion Posters
I was tasked to create posters for a promotion that was quite urgent. Since I didn't have any preparations, I had to improvise.
Without my proper camera, I had to use my phone to take photos that are appealing enough to attract customers
Variations
With the urgency of the situation, I was only able to make a few variations of the designs.
Project 3
Pourover Coffee Information Card
Coffee tasting cards are an important part of the specialty coffee experience to showcase the specifications of the coffee.
The Pourover Coffee was also the premium product in Preface Coffee and Wine. My team came up with an idea to include a tasting cards along with the coffee. I designed a few variations of the card, made mockups and presented them to the branding team for approval.
The design was later modified and implemented into the prooduct description cards for the retail coffee bean products that were sold in store.
Ideation and mockup
A few variations of the design were created for review. I decided to make physical 1:1 mockups of those design for the branding team to understand the look and feel of the designs and choose the final design.
Final design
A horizontal design was chosen to be the final design of the card. The information card was presented as part of the Pourover Coffee set to enhance customers' experience. The design was later modified and implemented into the Product information card for the coffee beans that were sold in the store.
Project 4
Coffee Machines Dial-in Templates
As a barista, our mornings began with dialing in the coffee machines to ensure the quality of the coffee. Baristas needed to record specific information and specifications as a reference for each day's brew. When I first started, everyone used scrap paper to write down this information, but the lack of standardization led to confusion among colleagues.
To address this, I created a template for the team to minimize confusion and ensure consistency. I designed the template to align with the company's visual identity, aiming for it to become the official template used across all stores.
Ideation and development
I quickly hand sketched a rough 1:1 template on what the layout would be and tried see which one would look best for that small size.
The first version of the template card was a simple grid table that shows the specs of the coffee shots.
Final version
A few months after implementing the dial-in template card, the process of dialing in the coffee machine became much more efficient. Motivated by this success, I decided to create a new version that was more visually appealing.
Initially, I experimented with a template that minimized text and focused on using images to make the process more engaging and enjoyable. However, I eventually decided to develop an official template that aligned with the company’s visual identity, with the aim of it being adopted in other stores as well.
